Beyond the usual clothing and toiletries, there are a few Australia specific items that are worth bringing rather than buying!
Sunscreen
Despite efforts made in the Montreal Protocol, Australia still sits under a major hole in the ozone layer. The Australian Government estimates there were 17,756 new cases of skin cancer in 2022. Be careful and bring sunscreen.
Multiple Forms of Identification
When attending social functions unrelated to the University, you may be asked to provide multiple forms of identification. I recommend a State ID or an International Drivers License in addition to your Driver's License.
Watch
Watches are significantly more expensive in Australia, but if you are looking for a souvenir Ray-Bans are sold at a relatively more affordable price.
Reusable Shopping Bag
Bring a reusable shopping bag and try to fit in with the Australians.
Opal Transportation Cards
Once you land it is important to purchase an Opal Card. Simply load the Opal Card with money at a Woolworth's Grocery Store or the Central Train Station. Tap your card on the reader at the entrance to Train, Ferry, or Bus Stations to ride around the city. Transportation charges are capped at $9 per day, so feel free to make full use of your Opal Card while exploring Sydney.
